•Former F1 Champ Schumacher In Critical Condition
UPDATE: Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is in a "critical" condition in hospital following a head injury suffered in a fall while skiing with his son in the French Alps. Schumacher was skiing off-piste in the resort of Meribel when the accident happened on Sunday morning. Although he was wearing a helmet he suffered a serious head trauma and was flown to hospital in Moutiers by helicopter and was subsequently transferred to a bigger facility in Grenoble. He was reported to be conscious immediately after the accident he had lost consciousness by the time he reached hospital. A statement from Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Grenoble said Schumacher had "suffered a severe head trauma with coma on arrival, which required immediate neurosurgical treatment" and that "he remains in a critical condition".(ESPN F1)

UPDATE: Michael Schumacher's condition is still "critical" and he is being kept in intensive care at a hospital in Grenoble following a skiing accident on Sunday. In an update on Monday morning, surgeons treating Schumacher said he was operated on immediately to relieve pressure on his head after a brain scan on Sunday night. He is being kept in an artificial coma with treatment to limit a cerebral oedema and a second operation is not currently planned. UPDATE 2: Michael Schumacher has shown a "slight improvement" but is still in a critical condition, according to doctors treating head injuries he sustained in a skiing accident on Sunday. On Tuesday the medical team at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Grenoble said his situation is "better controlled" than it was on Monday, but that he was not out of danger yet and remains in a medically-induced coma in intensive care. Schumacher's condition improved slightly on Monday, presenting an opportunity for doctors to carry out a scan on his brain later in the day. After evaluating the results the doctors were positively surprised and, with the agreement of the family, decided to undertake a second surgical intervention to reduce intercranial pressure. Following the two-hour surgery, which went according to plan, his doctors were able to say his situation has slightly improved since Monday.(ESPN F1)(12-31-2013)

UPDATE3: Schumacher's condition has remained stable since Tuesday after spending a third night in a coma in hospital. Schumacher remains in a critical condition overall and is still in intensive care at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Grenoble. His manager Sabine Kehm made a brief statement outside the hospital on Wednesday morning, saying there would not be a another press conference with Schumacher's medical team until there is further news to report. "Michael's condition has been carefully supervised all night and has remained stable overnight until now," Kehm said. "This is good news for the moment, and I repeat for the moment, because overall the situation is still critical. He remains in an artificial coma and this is all I can say. I don't want to go into any further speculation about any outcomes or prospects."(ESPN F1)(1-1-2014)

•Michael Schumacher leaving coma: Michael Schumacher's doctors have started trying to wake up the former Formula Champion from the medically induced coma he's been in since a skiing accident last month, his manager said Thursday. The 45-year-old Schumacher suffered serious head injuries when he fell and hit the right side of his head on a rock in the French resort of Meribel on Dec. 29. The seven-time F1 champion has been in an induced coma in Grenoble University Hospital since then, although his condition stabilized following surgery after initially being described as critical. "Michael's sedation is being reduced in order to allow the start of the waking up process which may take a long time," Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, said in a statement. Schumacher was being kept artificially sedated and his body temperature was lowered to between 34 and 35 degrees Celsius (93.2 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit), to reduce swelling in the brain, reduce its energy consumption and allow it to rest. Kehm said she was only providing an update now on Schumacher's condition to clarify media leaks, and that no further details would be provided.(ESPN)(1-31-2014)
