NASCAR Talk! / Re: Kyle Parked for the Weekend
« on: November 08, 2011, 01:55:40 AM »
Lots of thoughts on this subject.  And let me make this perfectly clear at this point:  I don't condone what KyB did.  I'm only considering the consequences of what he did.

First, a colleague mentioned a perfect suggestion:  Move KyB to Home Depot sponsorship.  Until "Kid Wonder" Logano took the seat in the #20, they had lots of experience w/ this sort of temperament behind the wheel.  Put Logano in the M&Ms car.

Next, despite the fact that it was not real positive, M&Ms got a LOT of air time this weekend.  Somehow their PR department will be able to spin this into something "sweet".  In the end, M&M/Mars is going to look good regardless of whether they decide to pull sponsorship from KyB or whether they decide to be loyal through thick and thin.  Either way, they have the opportunity for spinning this to their benefit.  No offense to Schrader, Sadler and Gilliland, but KyB was the best thing to happen to M&M/Mars in NASCAR in a long time.  My bet is they'll have a private chat w/ KyB, he'll make some additional public statements and probably have to do some serious butt-kissing (personal appearances) during the off-season, and that'll be the end of it vis-a-vis M&M/Mars.

Too tired to put any more of my thoughts to "paper" tonight.

Or do like they do in Dover..... They work with the police to make the 2 roads that you access the track flow in one direction before the race starts and when the race lets out...........

That's how we do it at Texas.

They had one of these cars at the track a few weeks back.  My colleague got pretty excited to see it and chased after it on a golf cart.  Talk about spittin' against the wind.

I would love to sit in that bridge for a race!

Me, too, Robby!  That would be incredible!  I'd be quite happy just sitting in the stands at Dover, for that matter.  I can't decide whether I would prefer to go to Dover or Darlington, but the Dover races are my favorite to watch on TV.  I'm excited that they changed the schedule around and I could watch this one.  It usually falls on a weekend when I'm wrapped up in another event.

NASCAR Talk! / New Hard Card Garage-Access Policy
« on: February 17, 2011, 11:25:46 PM »
ēNASCAR Revises Its Garage Access Policy: Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway not only opens up the 2011 NASCAR racing season, it also opens the garage gates to some very important fans. A revision in NASCAR's garage access policy allows an adult with approved access, either via annual credential (hard card) or a single event license (SEL), to bring his or her children in the NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series garages on race days. The policy is in effect only during the "cold" pre-race period. Each child will be issued a special credential. There is no minimum age requirement. Some "Need to Know" parameters for this new policy:
 ... blah, blah, blah.

What I want to know is where one gets this "annual credential (hard card)".  Is it the NASCAR-issued hard card only that they're talking about?  I'm sure each track issues their own individual version of a hard card.  Will those be considered an "annual credential" that would allow garage access?  If a track-issued hard card is acceptable according to these rules, then would one issued by Talladega be useable at Charlotte???  Who, other than NASCAR (or one of the other series such as IndyCar, etc) and the tracks has the right to issue a hard card that would allow access to the garages?  I think even the media have to obtain credentials either from NASCAR or the track that allows them in the garage.

When I first started watching NASCAR, I decided that the track I never wanted to visit was Texas Motor Speedway, mostly because it was just too close to home and if I were going to attend a NASCAR race, I wanted it to be someplace really cool.  At the same time I was pooh-poohing Texas, I was wishing I'd get to go to Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA.  How ironic considering that between TMS and Infineon, I've been at  over 15 NASCAR weekends.  That doesn't really answer RobbyBee's question, however.

Favorite Cup:   Darlington or Dover.  I need to get a short track in there, and Darlington just looks like a scrappin' sort of place to me.  Dover looks cool.  Realistically, Iíll probably go to Phoenix to watch my first short-track race as a spectator.  As a spectator, Iíve been to Atlanta and Daytona; also been to Texas, Infineon, New Hampshire

Favorite NNS:  Watkin's Glen.  Or the Montreal road course--Jacques Villaneuve (pardon the spelling).  Would like to have NNS run at Infineon but I donít see that happening.  Iíve only ever seen NNS cars on the track at Texas and New Hampshire.

Favorite Trucks:  ORP.  Just cuz.  Smaller field needs to run short tracks.  Iíve only ever seen the trucks on the track at Texas.

Least favorite:  I will not watch Fontana.  Not in a box.  Not even on Fox.  I will not watch ACS, France-I-Am.

Favorite IndyCar track:  Mid-Ohio.  It just looks so beautiful!  Iíve seen IndyCars at Texas and at Infineon.

NASCAR Talk! / Re: Stewart questioned by Australian police

I love how Stewart refers to himself in the plural.  I know lots of NASCAR drivers do it.  It some cases it makes sense, but "they let us go"..."we did what we were asked to do"...?

That way you and Texas16 can ride up front and the rest of us will have the backseat ;)

Usually people are calling "Shotgun" so pardon me if I'm suspicious that I'm being offered one of the front seats especially when I have no flying experience.  What's going to happen in the back of the plane that you want me out of the way???

Jerry Jones shouldn't mind loaning us his plane...it's not like he's going to use is for many more game weekends this year or that he has to fly any place to go to the SuperBowl.

NASCAR Talk! / NASCAR Superstore Hologram Codes
« on: December 18, 2010, 09:09:50 PM »
NASCAR.com Superstore used to have a deal where you could plug in the code off the hologram stickers on licensed NASCAR merchandise.  I don't know if that program is still going, but if it is, is anybody out there collecting the codes?  I occasionally get them (legitmately) but I can't in good faith use them.  I'll be glad to donate my codes for someone else's use.

NASCAR Talk! / Best Sponsor
« on: November 23, 2010, 10:40:00 PM »
Which sponsor do you think is the best and why?  I'm not even sure of my definintion of "best".  Most money to the car?  Best marketing of their driver/team?  Contributions to the sport?  Best use of NASCAR in marketing their product/service?

NASCAR Talk! / Re: New Crew Chiefs for Gordon, Martin and Earnhardt Jr.
« on: November 23, 2010, 10:35:46 PM »
I agree that the combination of Gustafson and DE Jr seems more logical based on personalities, and I'm surprised at the Letarte/DE Jr match-up.  BUT on the car and shop side of things, I think there might be a working rapport between Letarte and Knaus that Gustafson and McGrew may not have developed.  There might be something to having Letarte continue to work in the same facility as Knaus.  That way by bringing DE Jr into that work environment, there's only 1 moving piece to "bring round" instead of 2.  Same thing works in the 5/24 shop:  only Gordon is the moving piece in that batch of key personnel.

NASCAR Talk! / Re: More "Tweaking" on the way?
« on: November 22, 2010, 09:28:02 AM »
I don't see what excitement would be added if NASCAR expands the Chase field to 15.  It seems pointless.  By the end of the 2nd or 3rd week of the Chase, the natural process has narrowed the field down to about 6 driverss.  Nobody that's 15th going into the Chase is going to make an impact on the final 10 races of the season.  I would be more in favor of having a separate scoring system for the Chase drivers--gaps wide enough to be meaningful but not so that one bad race eliminates a driver from contention.  I've heard that suggested before and thought it was a stupid idea, but I think that's one option for keeping excitement in the Chase all the way to the end.  I am NOT one of those people who thinks we need to eliminate a Chase format altogether, however.

Wow!  That was a pretty good interview.  It doesn't sounded "canned" like so many of them do.

Wow!  I can't imagine what that would do to the handling of the cars.  It could result in a fascinating 2011 season.
